Place has been a staple here since before I was born. Don't listen to the tourist reviews; take it from a local. You want a good burger that doesn't cost $14? Come to Hungry Onion. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Came here with a huge group on our way from Portland to Canyonlands NP for spring break. It was a little difficult to find at first - I think it closed and reopened at a slightly different location recently, and Google still had the old address. We called to ask where they were, and the cheerful manager gave us directions, ending with "Get ready for the best lunch you've ever had!" We laughed, but this prediction wasn't far off the mark. I'm not sure what my favorite thing about this place was. The huge portions, the broad selection of stuff on the menu, the lightning-fast service considering the size of our group, and the friendliness of the staff (who seemed genuinely delighted to serve such a big group of travelers) were all highlights. We got mountains of fried food. Best onion rings I've ever had, a world away from the circles of onion-less breading you get at chain fast food joints. Finger steaks, which you legally can't leave Idaho without trying. Best of all, the manager even gave us free bottles of house-made ranch and fry sauce to take on our trip. I'm not sure when I'll be able to come back to Idaho, but now I have a reason to: The Hungry Onion.

Nestled right in the middle of old Town Meridian is an establishment every Meridian resident should frequent. A magical burger shack providing mouth watering gut busting 'merica between two buns. The Hungry Onion. Over the past year or so it appears things have changed slightly (see my updated menu pic). This was my first time here but I have had an eye on it for some time. They closed and have reopened and I'm sure glad they did because the entire family gave it two thumbs up. The cheeseburgers are exactly what you want from an authentically dated drive in, juicy patty off the flat top, creamy American cheese, burger dressing, and all on a properly steamy sesame seed bun. The onion rings are great, thick and crispy, and they give you a very generous portion with your choice of fry or tots in every combo. I am also loving the menu. Everything on it is what you want with nothing you don't. It's simplistic enough for a first timer to know what you want without holding things up, while having just a big enough spread to want to come back and try a few things...there is something for everyone, even without a kids menu. It's places like this that keep our community going and support our local foodies to keep on keepin' on. These are the kind of joints you want to see survive, thrive, and get behind. I'm lovin what you are doing here Hungry Onion. Keep it up and we will keep driving in and spreading the word. If you are in the mood for a burger skip the chain establishment cruise into Hungry Onion and eat up Boise.

Picture in your mind exactly what you would want in an old-school drive-in. This it that. Good burgers, low-key charm, a bit nostalgic.
